The draws for the men’s Dubai Tennis Championships were out on Saturday. The defending champion Daniil Medvedev is set to face the World No.45 Alexander Shevchenko in the first round. The Kazakh player recently shared his hilariously nervous take on facing Medvedev in the first round of the tournament.
Addressing the media, ahead of the game, Shevchenko jokingly said:
Basically, I thought it’s better to redo the draw. Obviously, it’s different playing here (compared to Madrid); he won last year, he’s the defending champion and just a great player. To beat him you have to play your best and hopefully he plays a little bit below his average. Let’s see, let’s hope.Alexander Shevchenko said

Medvedev and Shevchenko have squared off only once before this scheduled match. It was in the Madrid Open last year. Shevchenko started off the match superbly winning the first set. However, the Russian player dominated Shevchenko in the second and third sets to clinch the match.
The World No.4 might face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the quarters of the tournament. Moreover, his probable semifinal opponents include Hubert Hurkacz and Andy Murray. Second seed and last season’s runner-up Andrey Rublev will be facing China’s Zhang Zhizhen in the first round.
Daniil Medvedev gets his season running after the Australian Open debacle
The World No.4 will be making his first appearance after the Australian Open final. He blew a two-set lead to lose against Jannik Sinner. Medvedev also missed the ATP Rotterdam Open and the tournaments in Doha in which he was the defending champion.

This comes after his fitness concerns after the tiresome Australian Open in January; during which he also created the record of playing the greatest number of sets in a Grand Slam. Sinner won the Rotterdam tournament this season after beating Alex De Minaur in the finals.
With the Dubai Tennis Championships, the Russian player would be looking to get his season back on track. The main draw matches of the tournament are scheduled to start from March 2.
