The last thing any player wants is for a match to last two days. It is a rare thing, but at Wimbledon 2023, it’s almost normal. With the rain playing a massive part in the first few days of the Championships, many matches were suspended and pushed to the following day.
One such match was the second-round marquee clash between Daniil Medvedev and Adrian Mannarino. Medvedev eventually won, and in his post-match interview, he discussed the secret behind his win.
The play was suspended when both players were batting on court 2, with the scoreline being 6-3, 5-3. The game was then scheduled to be the second match on court 2 the very next day. Medvedev held his nerve and took the second set 6-3.
Mannarino found some form in the third set, but the Russian took it in a tiebreaker. Medvedev, a few years ago, lost a similar two-day match to Hubert Hurkacz.
When asked what he did differently this time, the Russian had this to say. “I remember a couple of years ago I lost [over two days] against Hurkacz and I kind of prepared for a new match, I did ice bath and everything like I had finished the match… Here I didn’t even wash my hair, I was like, I’ll wash it after the match, and it worked.”
Clearly, the change in plan worked. Unlike last time he didn’t treat the second of this match as a completely new thing. He instead stayed in the zone and relaxed only after he won.

Medvedev looks to compensate for missing out last year’s Wimbledon
The Russian and Belarusian players weren’t allowed to compete at the All-England Club last year. Many big names missed out on a great chance to lift the trophy. Daniil Medvedev was one of them. However, the Russian this time around looks extremely focused on a deep run. He started off really well against Arthur Fery. The third seed completed his first-round match quite easily.
The same intensity was seen in his second-round match against Mannarino, which lasted over two days. Medvedev made sure he didn’t lose momentum and claimed a solid victory. He will next face Italian Marton Fuscovics.
A tricky third-round encounter with his opponent playing some really good tennis. Fuscovic, who has only lost one set in his matches so far, will also be fresh for the challenge. Can he stop Medvedev, or will the Russian continue his journey toward the elusive Wimbledon trophy and honors board?
