Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev gave a phenomenal performance in the quarterfinals of the 2023 US Open as he defeated his good friend Andrey Rublev 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 in straight sets after an incredible battle. However, both players had to undergo a lot of struggles during the match due to the extreme heat conditions at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Medvedev is usually known for his never to give up attitude and he portrayed that brilliantly in tonight’s match. He had to take two medical timeouts and even use an inhaler in between for the difficulty he was facing, but he still managed to win the match against a tough opponent and he made it seem easy.
During one of the breaks, the third seed asked for a doctor to the umpire but could not get it due to an unfortunate miscommunication. The umpire heard that he was asking for water. In a viral clip, a distressed and tired Medvedev can be seen telling him, “I said doctor. I screamed doctor three times.” The confusion in the umpire’s voice during this conversation was unmissable.
Even Rublev was visibly in distress, but he managed himself better than Medvedev, whose situation was worrying. Novak Djokovic faced the same issue during his quarterfinal match against Taylor Fritz last night. Both the players were drenched in sweat by the end of the match and complained about the extreme conditions.
Daniil Medvedev faces the winner of Alcaraz vs Zverev in the semifinal
Medvedev will face the winner of the quarterfinal between Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev in the semifinal of the 2023 US Open. The Russian is pretty well known for his self-confidence. Having defeated Djokovic in the 2021 US Open to win his first Grand Slam, he knows how to face and beat the favorites. Thus he will be ready in the semis irrespective of who he has to face.
The third seed has been in impeccable form so far in this tournament and stands as a strong competitor to win the tournament. If he manages to pull it off, it will be the second Grand Slam of his career. However, in order to do so, he will have to win two extremely difficult matches that await him.
