Daniil Medvedev had a bittersweet realization after his US Open final defeat. He admitted that he was not happy with his anniversary gift to his wife, Daria Medvedev, this year. The Russian made a comparison to his anniversary two years ago when he won his first and only Grand Slam at the US Open. He joked that it was a pretty bad gift this year when he referred to the fact that he had won two years ago on his anniversary. But unfortunately, this year, in his match against Novak Djokovic, he had to suffer a loss.

In the on-court interview following the final match, Medvedev said, “On the second note, I was here two years ago when I won. And I was like ‘What a great anniversary gift! Pretty s**t one today,” he said. The Russian also said that the scenario was quite ironic because the dates usually change. But on the day of the final, it was their anniversary once again.

Medvedev also revealed that he was trying to motivate himself to the maximum limit to get the trophy once again, on account of their anniversary. “So I thought like, come on, do it one more time,” he said, regretting that it did not happen this year. After his victory at the 2021 US Open, Medvedev took the stage to mention that it was their third anniversary and that his title-winning campaign was a very good gift that he could give her. However, he could repeat the feat this year.

Despite his impressive campaign at the US Open 2023, which included a win against defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, the night ultimately belonged to Novak Djokovic. With a score of 6-3, 7-6, 6-3, the Serb clinched the trophy. This title makes it his 24th Grand Slam overall and 4th US Open title. While the night saw a battle of the champions, it was Djokovic who came out the victor.

Daniil Medvedev admitted in his runner-up speech that the fact that he was able to beat Novak Djokovic two years ago was because he was at the pinnacle of his career. He explained that he was quite amazed that he managed to beat his two times opponent at the final.

He also pondered on a situation, where Djokovic and Rafael Nadal did not exist. “I’ve played five finals against them and I only managed to win one! I don’t know if it is good or bad,” he said.

The Russian also said that the 24-time Grand Slam champion pushes him to be better. He also remembered when he was ranked 500 in the World when they first met. The former US Open champ said that Djokovic treated him with kindness. He revealed that he was quite amazed when the Serb treated him just like a ‘regular person’.
