Russian tennis ace Daniil Medvedev had yet another heartbreak as he lost to Jannik Sinner in the 2024 Miami Open semifinal.
The defending champion in Miami could not stand a chance against the reigning Australian Open champion. Medvedev lost the match in straight sets. In fact, he could win only three games.
This defeat comes after Medvedev had toppled the Italian in the final last year. Also, it was the second consecutive defeat for the Russian against the 22-year-old Italian in 2024.
With Sinner dominating Medvedev unlike last year when the Russian used to convincingly win matches against the Italian, he was asked about the changes he observed in the youngster.
After his semifinal loss, Daniil Medvedev was asked as he beat Sinner last time in Miami, what changes the Italian made to turn the tables this year. To this, Medvedev said that while he does not know Sinner too closely, he can just talk about the changes he has made on the court. He talked about Sinner’s bigger serves and reduced errors.
We don't know each other, like, too close but we get along well. I don't see any difference. As a player, he misses less, he chooses his shots more wisely. He serves 10 times better. You know, Jannik was always serving well, but now he serves like big, big.Daniil Medvedev said
Daniil Medvedev in awe of Jannik Sinner’s big serves
Talking about Jannik Sinner‘s improved serves, the Russian ace looked in awe at the changes Italian had implemented and also rued not working on his serve. Medvedev said that the 22-year-old had made a big improvement and then stated that he could have served better during his match on Friday.
Yeah, I wonder actually how he made it, because serve is not that easy, it's not that easy shot to work on, and now he's, yeah, his serve is a big improvement for him and kind of what I have could have done better today, the serve. Yeah, so not much more to add.Daniil Medvedev said after the loss.
Notably, the 22-year-old Italian beat the defending champion 6-1, 6-2. This was Sinner’s fifth consecutive win over Medvedev. While the Italian completely thrashed his Russian counterpart here in Miami, Sinner had made a terrific comeback in the Australian Open final to win it in five sets.
These five wins have turned the tide in the head-to-head record between the two players. While Medvedev was leading it 6-0 up until last year’s Miami Open final, it stands 6-5 now. In the five matches where Sinner beat Medvedev, three were in a final with a defeat each in a quarterfinal and a semifinal.
