Daniil Medvedev opens up about the biggest regret of his life and talks about his future ambitions. After an inconsistent 2022 season, the 27-year-old has regained his top form this year. He won 18 consecutive matches and secured his spot in the semi-finals at Indian Wells by defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

In the next round, he will face Frances Tiafoe. Medvedev’s impressive performance at the tournament is set to propel him to the world No. 5 ranking. Having already won his first Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2021, his current momentum suggests that he could be a strong contender for future titles.

Speaking in the post-match press conference, Medvedev said, “My most important goal is to have no regrets when I finish my career. Meaning the match with Rafa [in the 2022 Australian Open final], for sure I regret that I couldn’t win it and didn’t have my second Slam. I was close, but I fought. I fought till the end. Maybe I missed some shots, but that’s sport. So far, I feel like I’m achieving my goal, even last year not the best year, but I was trying.

He further continued and said, “I don’t want to be when I’m 35 or whatever and I retire, I don’t want to say, like I heard some other tennis players do, ‘if I would have done this different in my career, maybe my career would be better or I regret doing this’. I want to, when I finish my career, no matter how many Slams, tournaments won, or whatever, just to know that I have done my best. I was trying hard, and I was doing my best, and it has been working this year. So that’s my biggest goal.”

Daniil Medvedev to challenge local hero, Frances Tiafoe in

Tiafoe vs Medvedev

Daniil Medvedev continues his impressive run at Indian Wells, booking his place in the semi-finals after defeating Fokina. His next opponent will be local hero Frances Tiafoe, who fought his way to the quarter-finals with impressive victories over Marcos Giron, Jason Kubler, and Alejandro Tabilo. He later defeated former champion Cameron Norrie to secure his spot in the semis.

While Medvedev has won all four of their previous encounters, Tiafoe cannot be underestimated, especially with the home crowd behind him. Despite Medvedev’s current form, Tiafoe has the potential to be a dangerous opponent and make things difficult for the Russian.

Medvedev voiced concerns over the tournament conditions, yet he managed to win his matches, even when they went to three sets. Although he has managed to counter Tiafoe’s playing style in their previous encounters, Tiafoe’s consistent performance throughout the tournament indicates that an upset could be on the cards if he maintains his level of play.
