“He is religious, and that’s important!” Daniil Medvedev reveals why he made Andrey Rublev the godfather of his daughter Alisa

World No. 3 Daniil Medvedev is on a scintillating run at the tournament, where he has always looked a step above the other tennis players. He will be facing one of his best friends, Andrey Rublev, in a thrilling quarterfinal contest. Following his huge win over Alex de Minaur in the round of 16, he was asked a couple of tough questions at the post-match conference, among which he was also asked to comment on the decision to choose Rublev as his daughter’s godfather.
Having lost the first set against De Minaur, Medvedev pulled off an impressive comeback to book his name in the last eight matches for the US Open title. While he faces Rublev, who is also the godfather of his daughter. Medvedev went back in time to speak about his decision to do so. He talked about marking the decision as a pretty straightforward and easy one, as he finds Rublev a very kind and religious person.
He said, “We are very close. I don’t like to label people as my ‘BFFs’, but we are close, he is very kind and he is religious, which is important to be a godfather.” Rublev was also asked about bits of this question in his post-match conference. Rublev said, “I think it’s something already like a family because I’m godfather of his daughter. So, it’s become a bit. Obviously, we built our relationship because of tennis, but now it’s already bigger than tennis.”
How have Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev fared against each other so far?

Friends in real life, Medvedev and Rublev have faced each other on seven occasions in the past. Medvedev has tasted victory on five occasions, and Rublev has won twice. The two modern stars of the sport have known each other since they were six years old and spend a lot of time together outside the pitch. Apart from that, their families do gather for a get-together once in a while, which provides proof of the strong bond the two share.
Rublev beat Medvedev at the 2022 ATP Finals and also in the semi-finals of the 2021 Cincinnati Masters, with both encounters settled in a three-set thriller. Medvedev has defeated his friend on five occasions, with the Dubai Championships final being the most recent of all. Other victories have come at the 2021 Australian Open, the 2020 US Open, the 2019 St. Petersburg Open, and the 2019 Cincinnati Masters as well.
