Russian professional tennis player Daniil Medvedev took on Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals of the ongoing US Open in an intense battle at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Although the third seed emerged victorious, he was struggling during the match due to the extreme conditions.

The extreme temperature and humidity are seemingly taking a toll on the players during the matches of the US Open and Daniil Medvedev was not its first prey. The Russian had to use an inhaler and take two medical timeouts. He was seen complaining about the conditions even during the match

Upon being asked about the conditions after the match was over, Medvedev said, “This and the Tokyo Olympic Games – it was brutal. The only good thing I see in these conditions is that both suffer. Usually, there is not only one who suffers so it’s tough for both of us. There were some ups and downs but that’s normal.”

“At the end of the first set I couldn’t see the ball anymore. I played with sensations, try to go for it, try to run, try to catch the balls and he did the same sometime. Before the point it seems like he could not run any more, and I was like ‘when is he going to be tired’ but actually we were both tired. Super tough to win,” he said talking about the struggles.

Daniil Medvedev applauded Andrey Rublev’s never-give-up mentality after his victory. He mentioned that both he and his fellow Russian opponent do not give up easily.

He said that when Rublev was up a break in the third set, he couldn’t wait to go to the cold shower. However, the problem with cold showers is that when one comes out of it, they either feel good or they can’t move their body as it gets blocked. Thus, Medvedev decided to continue anyway.

Medvedev will either face Carlos Alcaraz or Alexander Zverev in the semifinals of the 2023 US Open. Whoever it is that he faces, it’s going to be a sensational match. He won the 2021 US Open by beating Novak Djokovic in the final and thus has a brilliant record in the tournament. Having already reached the semifinals, the third seed now has a great chance of lifting his second Grand Slam title.
