Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev has remained calm and collected despite being booed by the Madrid crowd during his match against Alexander Shevchenko. Medvedev’s comments come after he, Holger Rune and Novak Djokovic have all been targeted by booing recently.
Despite the negativity from the crowd, Medvedev managed to win and reach to the round of 16 in the Spanish capital after defeating his opponent. During the match, Medvedev received catcalls from the spectators after he hit his racquet in the first set. In retaliation, the 27-year-old responded by putting his finger to his ear, which exacerbated the crowd’s reaction.
Nevertheless, Medvedev remained unfazed by the booing and said that it is just a part of the sport. He cited Holger Rune as an example, who was also booed during his match. Despite the negative reaction from the crowd, Rune managed to stay focused and win the match.
“I feel like sometimes the crowd right now in tennis, for whatever reason, I don’t know, maybe it was like this before also, comes for this excitement. So as soon as something is happening, they don’t even know what’s happening, they just boo you. I think it’s just part of tennis right now,” Medvedev stated in a post-match interview.
Daniil Medvedev and Holger Rune booed by the ‘aggressive’ Madrid crowd without solid reason

In a shocking turn of events, Daniil Medvedev and Holger Rune were subjected to boos and jeers from the Madrid Open‘s crowd during their matches. The Russian and Danish players were left stunned by the hostility of the crowd, which appeared to have no solid reason for their behavior.
Medvedev, who is the world number three, and Rune, were visibly rattled by the treatment they received from the crowd. Medvedev was seen gesturing towards the stands, clearly unhappy with the hostile reception. Regardless of the reason for the crowd’s behavior, many were quick to condemn their actions, describing them as unsportsmanlike and disrespectful. Tennis is a sport that prides itself on its traditions of fair play and sportsmanship, and the behavior of the Madrid crowd was seen as a betrayal of these values.
Medvedev, who ultimately won the match in straight sets, was gracious in victory and thanked the crowd for their support. However, it was clear that the behavior of the crowd had left a sour taste in the mouths of both players.
