In a highly anticipated matchup between two of the top players in men’s tennis, Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev faced off at the Monte Carlo Masters on Thursday night. The match did not disappoint, as it was not only a battle of skill but also a bit of a trash-talking showdown.
The ATP appears to be adopting trash language like the WTA by doing so, journalist Ben Rothenberg noted. Jessica Pegula stated last month that she wanted the WTA to follow the ATP’s lead in allowing greater trash talk. Medvedev-Zverev match resulted in that precisely.
Alexander Zverev accused Medvedev of gamesmanship and cheating by taking a toilet break when it was not allowed in Zverev’s opinion. This accusation added fuel to the fire of what was already a heated rivalry between the two players.
Medvedev, however, had a simple response to the issues between him and Zverev, delivering a cold handshake and saying, “He served two times for the match, so probably should’ve done better.” This response showed that Medvedev was not interested in getting into trash talk.
While some may see trash talk as an entertaining element of the sport, it’s important to remember that it can also have negative consequences. Trash talk can sometimes cross the line and turn into personal attacks, which can damage relationships and create unnecessary tension between players.

Youngster Holger Rune stuns Daniil Medvedev with straight set upset at Monte-Carlo Masters Quarterfinals
Daniil Medvedev‘s confidence and trash talk did not help him in his quarterfinal match against Holger Rune at the Monte Carlo Masters on Friday. Medvedev, who saw off Alexander Zverev in the previous round with a bit of trash talk, lost to the 19-year-old Danish player in straight sets.
The young player played with composure and fearlessness, hitting powerful shots and displaying an impressive level of athleticism. On the other hand, Medvedev seemed off his game from the start, making several unforced errors and struggling to find his rhythm. Despite his trash talk and confidence leading up to the match, he was unable to produce the level of tennis needed to defeat his opponent.
In the end, Holger Rune‘s impressive performance deserves recognition and celebration, as he secured his place in the semifinals of the Monte-Carlo Masters. As for Medvedev, he will have to regroup and reflect on this loss, using it as motivation to improve and come back stronger in future tournaments.
