The 2024 Australian Open continues to see thrillers being played day-in-day-out. On Day 11, it was Daniil Medvedev and Hubert Hurkacz who played out an absolute thriller on the Rod Laver Arena. Fighting for a place in the semis, the two men left everything on the court before the former World No. 1 emerged victorious.

Medvedev won the match 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 to reach the semis in Melbourne Park for the third time in his career. The 3-hour and 59-minute battle drained the two men completely. But the last bit of Medvedev surprise was yet to come.

Following his victory and before approaching the net for the handshake, Medvedev looked towards his box led by coach Gilles Cervara and blew three kisses towards them. The moment led to a big applause and roar from the crowd, and certainly had Cervara having a wide smile.

The win now takes Medvedev to the AO semis for the third time. On both the previous occasions (2021, 2022) he finished as the tournament’s runner-up. This time, however, he would like to finally get his hands on the trophy after two failed attempts.

Daniil Medvedev explains his reasons behind blowing the kisses

The World No. 3 is one of the best speakers when it comes to interviews. He brings humor, wit and is always straightforward avoiding beating around the bush. His on-court interview after his win over Hubert Hurkacz was no different.

Speaking with the legendary John McEnroe, the Russian was asked about showing some love to his coach as he often gives him a hard time. It seemed Medvedev had the reply ready beforehand and quickly went on to say,

On match point, I blew him some kisses. I think it’s the first time ever. I don’t know if I’ll do it again.
said Medvedev

The two-time AO runner-up now has to play the waiting game to know his semis opponent. He will take on the winner from the clash between Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev. The Russian now joins Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner in the semis with the Serb and Italian set to clash for a place in the finals.
