“I really don’t know,” Daniil Medvedev’s honesty raises dilemma between the undisputed champion Novak Djokovic and underdog Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open

The third seed joked that he rather wishes for a very long match between Sinner and Djokovic, which may exhaust them, so that the Russian can have some advantage in the possible final.

Daniil Medvedev had to dig deep during his clash against Hubert Hurkacz, who was playing his first quarterfinals at the Australian Open on Wednesday (January 24). Both of them had won two sets each (Medvedev won the first and third sets), with the Pole taking advantage of the tiebreak in the fourth set.

The match was then pushed into the decider, which the Russian won, winning the match with a score of 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. Medvedev is now waiting for the result of the other quarter-final match between Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Germany’s Alexander Zverev.

The winner of the match will be facing Medvedev in the semi-finals on Friday (January 26). The other two semi-finalists are World No. 1 Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner. They will also lock horns on Friday (January 26). After the intense match in the quarter-finals, Medvedev spoke about who he thinks will face him in the final if he makes it there.

The thing is, Jannik is playing so well now, so if I'm 100% honest with you, if you ask me who - let's say I'm in the final -- who I want to play, Novak, who never lost here, whatever, is going for some crazy stats, or Jannik who is not losing a set even when he's 5-1 down in the tiebreak and stuff like this, I'm, like, I don't know (smiling). I really don't know.
Medvedev said at the press conference

The third seed joked that he rather wishes for a very long match between Sinner and Djokovic, which may exhaust them, so that the Russian can have some advantage in the possible final.

I want them to go 7 hours 30, tiebreak 30-28 in the fifth, and then maybe let's see if they are a little bit tired on Sunday. No, I think it's going to be a great match.

But the path to the finals is not going to be an easy one for the 27-year-old. Alcaraz was eliminated from the 2023 US Open due to Medvedev in the semi-finals. They faced each other five times, with Alcaraz winning it three times. They last faced each other at the Nitto ATP Finals where the Spaniard won in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

Medvedev and Sinner faced each other nine times, with the former winning six of them. On the other hand, Djokovic leads has a head-to-head record of 10-5 over Medvedev.
