Russian No 1 Daria Kasatkina had a heartbreaking end to her 2022 campaign with her loss at the WTA Finals. She failed to pass the round-robin stage in her debut appearance at the Year-end Championship. Recently, she became vocal about her sexual orientation through a YouTube video with one of the Russian bloggers which were highly criticized. She condemned the attacks made on her after a Russian politician’s attempt to backlist her failed.

During the season, she won two titles with both victories coming on hard courts. She is yet to win a Grand Slam title but has won six singles WTA titles. One of her remarkable performances has been at the French Open as she made her appearance at the semifinals of a major tournament for the first time. The tennis player started the year ranked World No. 26 but climbed up the rankings to finish the year as the World No. 8.

After she came out as a lesbian, Roman Teryushkov who is a member of the 8th State Duma had appealed before the Ministry of Justice for listing Daria Kasatkina as a foreign agent. This would have banned her from receiving state funding and would have faced other repercussions. But soon, the appeal was denied which was confirmed by the politician himself but went on to say that he has re-sent a deputy request to check the legality of such responses and take appropriate measures.

World No 8 took to her Telegram account to retaliate after all the accusations made by Teryushkov which was admitted by the politician himself in an interview. She sent out a sarcastic reply saying “How nice to have fans from the State Duma” which was followed by a smiling emoji covered in love hearts.

She was not allowed to compete at Wimbledon due to the ban on Russian and Belarusian players because of the ongoing Ukraine War. At the US Open, she suffered a shocking first-round exit. With a good run throughout the 60 matches that she had played, Daria Kasatkina finished the season with a whooping 40-20 record.

After she her confronted about her sexual orientation through a video in the mid of the year, she has been under constant criticism and backlash for being influenced by the western communities. She revealed her struggles with coming out as a gay individual and her fight for LGBTQ+ rights. She even highlighted the conservative mentalities of society. She admitted that she was prepared for the worst outcomes however it wasn’t that worse reaction.

However, she spoke about how she felt about societal pressures as she took a lot of time in accepting the way she is. She stated that one starts developing weird thoughts and fears the society but finally she decided to let go of her inhibitions to come to the conclusion and accept the reality. Despite her claims of being gay, Daria Kasatkina has been awarded the title of Honored Masters of Sports of Russia for her contribution to Team Russia’s victory at the 2021 BJK Cup.
