In her comeback match, American legend Serena Williams went down fighting in the first round at Wimbledon 2022 against Harmony Tan of France in three tight sets 5-7,6-1,6-7(7-10). This was Serena’s first competitive match in a year. She played at Wimbledon last year where she injured herself in the first round and was forced to retire. She was then out of action for a year before announcing her comeback at Wimbledon.
Serena brought back the years to play some amazing tennis but at times looked very rusty. The lack of match practice was visible as she missed many easy points which in turn cost her the match. Despite everything, fans were very happy to see Serena back on the court once again. She has cast doubts about her future but many expect her to be back for the North-American hard court swing.
Serena’s return has once again stirred the GOAT debate. At 23 majors, Serena holds the record for second-most singles majors in tennis history over Margaret Court and if all aspects are to be considered, she is probably the greatest female tennis player to have played the sport.

But many even consider Serena the greatest player ever- male or female and put her above the likes of Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Roger Federer. While Rafael Nadal is still one slam behind Serena at 22, it can be argued that he has played on a very tough playing field, unlike the American. The same scenario applies to Novak Djokovic who has age on his side and could realistically match or even overtake Serena’s tally.
Fans on social media too had mixed opinions over the same. While some consider her the ultimate GOAT, many disagreed with the argument.
