Deported along with Novak Djokovic, Renata Voracova’s visa reinstated by Australia while the Serbian remains banned

Renata Voracova, Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic, the 35-year-old Serbian recently won the 21st Grand Slam of his career after beating Nick Kyrgios in the finals of the 2022 Wimbledon. After overtaking Roger Federer in the total Grand Slam tally and being just one major title behind Rafael Nadal, the Serbian is faced with many controversies due to his stance on taking the Covid-19 vaccine.

Earlier this year, Djokovic was deported from Australia and barred from participating in the 2022 Australian Open for being unvaccinated against Covid-19. After he was banned from entering the country, according to Australian law, deportation from the country is also accompanied by exclusion from the country for three years.

Hailing from the Czech Republic, 38-year-old Renata Voracova was in a similar situation as Novak Djokovic in January as she had her visa canceled as well for not being vaccinated and was barred from participating in the Australian Open. There has been new development however as the Administrative Appeals Tribunal of Australia overturned its decision to cancel Voracova’s visa.

Jan Redfern, tribunal’s vice president and head of the migration and refugee division said, “There was no evidence Ms. Voracova failed to comply with her visa conditions, She had followed all relevant rules and there was evidence she had relied on representations made to her by Tennis Australia and the Department of Health in Victoria about her medical exemption. I accept the submission that there was no law preventing Ms. Voracova from entering Australia at the relevant time even though she was unvaccinated.

With this decision, Voracova will be allowed to play at the Australian Open next year but Djokovic’s chances of playing at the tournament still hang in the balance as the Serbian was banned from entering Australia for three years, unlike Voracova. Reports suggest, however, that Djokovic’s team will be looking to apply for a new visa on the ground that the previous visa cancellation rules don’t apply anymore.
