Did Serena Williams’ mom really fall asleep during her retirement match?
Serena Williams and Oracene Price
Former World No. 1 Serena Williams is believed to have played the final match of her career as she suffered a 3-set defeat in the 3rd round of the recently concluded 2022 US Open. The American lost to Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic, who went on to reach the quarter-finals.
For Serena, it was a good retirement run. She had made her season debut in 2022 at The Championships in Wimbledon as a wild card. However, she was bombed out in the first round itself. After that, Serena did play in a few hard-court tournaments as a build-up to the US Open.
At the age of 40, and being injured for more than a year, her extended run to the third round in New York was a treat for billions of her fans. They were hoping it would not be a nightmare like Wimbledon.
Serena Williams’ mother was caught snoozing during her final match
Having announced her plans to ‘evolve’ from tennis into other things before the start of the US Open Leg series, it is believed that the defeat to Tomljanovic will be Serena’s last ever match as a Pro. The American has, however, hinted that she might play next year’s Australian Open but the chances are slim.
With Serena in her final tournament, her box featured her husband Alexis Ohanian, daughter Olympia, Serena’s sister Venus Williams and her mother Oracene Price along with Serena’s coaching team to cheer for the 23-time Major winner for one last time.
With Serena winning the first set against Ajla in the tiebreaker, the Australian fought back dropping just 2 games in the second set. With all to play in the third set and Serena bringing out some brilliant shots, the atmosphere at the Arthur Ashe Stadium was absolutely electric.
Serena’s mother Oracene was however, captured, on camera dozing off during the third set. With the TV cameras panning on Serena’s box for their reactions, Mom Oracene was seen with her head tilted, supported by her hand and dark glasses covering her shut eyes. She was caught napping!
To say that Oracene missed the entire match would be uncharitable. She had the pleasure of watching her darling daughter getting uninhibited love from the crowd in what turned out to be the last match of her glorious and successful career which spanned over 27 years. Serena left no stone unturned in that brilliant career run.
