Serbian tennis legend Novak Djokovic is one of the finest and most accomplished players in the Open Era. Overall, he has won 91 ATP singles titles, which include a record 65 Big Titles. In the list of Grand Slam singles titles, the 35-year-old is ahead of his Swiss rival Roger Federer and just one short of the ‘King of Clay’ Rafael Nadal. With the retirement of the Swiss star in September, the race to achieve the highest tally of Grand Slams has become a two-sided one.
In this interesting race between the Big 2, German former professional tennis player, Tommy Haas has thrown his weight behind the Serb who thinks Djokovic will do anything to leave Nadal behind in the major tally. Haas was in podcast conservation with sports journalist Matthias Stach where he explained why he believes so.
“Novak doesn’t overlook anything and will do everything to have the most Grand Slam titles at the end of the day,” said Haas, as reported by Eurosports Germany. “Djokovic doesn’t forget anything”, Haas further added on Djokovic’s ability to bounce back.
Currently, the Spanish star Rafael Nadal, with 22 Grand Slams is ahead of the Serb who has 21 majors to his name. As both, the players have given no hints of retirement in a coming couple of seasons, the race to achieve the peak is still on between the two. The Swiss legend Roger Federer left the court with 20 titles and was the first one among the Big 3 to reach that number.
Novak Djokovic’s Illustrious career, comparison with Federer and Nadal
Serbian tennis legend Novak Djokovic has had an illustrious career so far. Other than the 21 grand Slam wins, the 35-year-old has won a record 38 Masters titles. Djokovic has completed a non-calendar year Grand Slam in singles, becoming the only man in tennis history to hold four majors at once across three different surfaces.
In 2011, Djokovic ascended to No. 1 for the first time, winning three out of the four majors and five Masters titles. Collectively he has been ranked world No. 1 for a record total of 373 weeks and has finished as the year-end No. 1 a record seven times. The Serb has a better record than Nadal and Federer when it comes to their on-court rivalries.
Djokovic and Federer have met 50 times and Djokovic has an edge over Federer with 27 wins to Federer’s 23. In an Open-Era record for head-to-head meetings between male players, Djokovic has met Nadal 59 times, Djokovic leading by 30–29. Due to his ability to dominate on all types of surfaces, he has been labeled as the most complete player on tour by many tennis legends.
