Austrian tennis player Dominic Thiem has made it very clear that his immediate goal is to be fit enough to make it to the main draws of the 2024 Australian Open directly. The 30-year-old has been trying to make a comeback for a very long time now but due to several reasons, injury being the major one, he has been unable to do so.
Thiem stated that his main goal is to perform well in the 2024 Olympics. He has never participated in the Olympics before and wants to do well there this time. The event will be held in Roland Garros. Having reached the finals of the 2018 and 2019 French Opens only to lose against Rafael Nadal, Thiem has a pretty good record in Roland Garros, which he will put to use in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
“My comeback is going more difficult than planned, I also have a lot of problems with injuries. Mentally it is not easy, but I set myself achievable goals. I’d like to get straight into the main draw in Melbourne, that’s a smaller goal. Next year the Olympic Games are my biggest goal, I have never participated in the Games before and now it is at Roland Garros, where I have only good memories,” said the Austrian. (H/T: Tennis Plaza)
Dominic Thiem won his only Grand Slam in the 2020 US Open by defeating Alexander Zverev in the final. Apart from that, he reached three other Grand Slam finals, namely the 2018 and 2019 French Opens (against Rafael Nadal) and the 2020 Australian Open (against Novak Djokovic).
Dominic Thiem’s current form
The Austrian suffered an injury to his right wrist in mid-2021 and suffered with the same injury for over two years on and off. The injury has taken a major hit on his performances, as he barely resembles his old self after making a return to the court. However, he sometimes shows glimpses of his best.
Lately, the Austrian’s performances have been mediocre. He got eliminated in the second round of the US Open by Ben Shelton. Following that, he reached the quarterfinal of the Astana Open and the round of 16 of the Bratislava Open. He is currently playing in the European Open and has reached the round of 16 of the tournament.
