Former World No. 1 Andy Murray recently sent shockwaves in the tennis world after his defeat in Dubai. The Briton lost to fifth-seeded Ugo Humbert in the second round. The Frenchman won the tie 6-2, 6-4.
It was Murray’s his sixth defeat of the season in just eight matches. Following the match, a frustrated Murray confirmed that he won’t ‘play past this summer‘. By summer, the Briton talked about the English summer which concludes around August in England.

Murray has long been questioned about his decision to continue playing. He had heavily criticized BBC recently for telling him to retire after one of his defeats. With the media continuously asking just one question, it felt like Murray decided it was enough and put an end to everything.
Going by the three-time singles Grand Slam title winner’s statement, he is most likely to hang up his racket after the conclusion of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. The All-England Club has been a special place for him as he has won Wimbledon twice and his first singles Olympics gold also came there.
Reacting to the clip of Murray’s retirement comments, his mom Judy Murray took to X (formerly Twitter). She expressed her frustration at Andy’s critics and recalled how he was always burdened by the media.
Every single press conference he is asked the same question. When he started on @atptour it was “ah but when r u going to win Wimbledon?” Every single time. Let him enjoy whatever time is left of his career. He is 50 in the world, has a metal hip, a bipartite patella + 4 kids.Tweeted Judy.
As her tweet went viral, former US Open champ Dominic Thiem reached out. While he simply tweeted his support, it would have surely meant a lot for the Murray family. The Austrian hailed the double Olympian for his career calling him an ‘absolute legend’.
@andy_murray one of the best players ever and absolute legend of the game foreverTweeted Thiem.
What is the H2H record between Dominic Thiem and Andy Murray?
Thiem is one of the rare players to have won a Grand Slam and not be part of the Big-4 quartet. The Austrian won the 2020 US Open when he defeated Alexander Zverev in the finals. The German had won the first two sets but Thiem staged an epic comeback to win the title in Flushing Meadows.

The two former US Open winners have met a total of five times on the Tour. None of the meetings have however been in any finals or a Grand Slam event. They first met in the second round of the 2014 Rotterdam Open followed by the quarter-finals of the 2015 Miami Masters.
Murray won both of those matches. Thiem leveled the head-to-head with his back-to-back wins. These included wins in the semi-finals of the 2017 Barcelona Open and the quarter-finals of the 2019 China Open. Their last meeting took place in the first round of the 2022 Madrid Masters with Murray winning it.
