Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina pens down the current reality of war-struck Ukraine in fear of the outside world forgetting the struggles.
With the Russians striking down on Ukraine for nearly two years, everyday reality was never the same again for the Ukrainians. However, the war is not being spoken about as much by the media as it used to be. And that’s precisely what the tennis pro has opened up about.
In her latest BBC Sports column, Elina Svitolina penned down all her thoughts about the current situation in her home country.
Ukraine was invaded by Russia almost two years ago. It feels like it has been ten years. Missiles and drones are targeting our country on a daily basis. It is non stop. The war is still happening and we don't want the world to forget about that.Wrote the Ukrainian tennis star.
Svitolina also regretted that the world did not care about the issue as much as it once did. She further revealed that people in Ukraine were sleeping in the parking lots of buildings because they had to get back to work the next day if they wanted to feed their families. Such is the dire situation in Ukraine.
The World No. 23 player also admitted that she was worried about the long-term effects on the younger generation.
People are living in stress every single day because of the missiles. It is extremely disturbing and damaging, and I fear for the long term effects on the younger generation.Said the Ukrainian.
With that being said, there is no denying that Svitolina is in complete anguish over the situation in her home country.
Elina Svitolina talks about the responsibility sports people have to use their platform
As per the tennis star herself, she felt the responsibility to use tennis as a platform to talk about her country as much as possible so that she could announce to the world the kind of help they need. ‘
As a high profile Ukrainian athlete I feel it is my mission to help Ukraine and the Ukrainians who are in need - whether that is the rebuilding of homes, medical needs or helping young sports talent.Said the Ukrainian.
Notably, she further quoted examples of former World No. 13 tennis player Alexandr Dolgopolov, football legend Andriy Shevchenko, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Mykhailo Mudryk, and Oleksandr Osyk as examples of sportspeople who are completely invested in the war efforts.
We are a small group of athletes who are representing Ukraine on the world stage and have a big platform to use.Said Svitolina.
Ultimately, the Ukrainian wants nothing but to make the struggles open to a global audience. She concluded by saying that regardless of these efforts, the daily life in Ukraine remains unchanged, and war is the current reality for most of Ukraine’s populace.
