Emma Navarro revealed an interesting confession during her post-match interview in San Diego. The American said she never watched tennis while growing up but only wanted to play.
The 22-year-old has been the rising star in WTA. Having climbed from 134 this time last year to 26, (highest ranking 23) has proven how talented she is. She defeated Daria Saville in the San Diego Open to clinch a spot in the semifinals.
However, despite, her great form, the tennis star has confessed that she only began to watch tennis last year. A shocking revelation that is very rare for athletes, especially tennis players who are as talented as Navarro.
Navarro said:
I started watching tennis like a year ago. Which is pretty crazy. My coach was like yeah you need to start watching tennis, try to watch like an hour a week. Now I’ve become a little bit of a tennis nerd. I watch whenever I can. But, yeah, growing up I wasn't that interested in watching tennis, I just wanted to play. The 2021 NCAA tennis Champion would be hoping to win another title this year. Navarro, who got past the first two rounds of the Australian Open before losing to Dayana Yastremska, has lost only four matches this season.
Emma Navarro to play Katie Boulter in the semifinals of San Diego Open
Emma Navarro will play Katie Boulter in the semifinal of the San Diego Open. The World No. 48e Boulter shockingly defeated Donna Vekic in the quarterfinals, making it her first semifinal reach this season.
Navarro, the No. 3 seed advanced to the semifinals of the WTA 500 in San Diego for the second successive year. She defeated Daria Saville with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Daria Saville on Friday.
Navarro is hoping to win the San Diego title this year. In 2023, she lost to Sofia Kenin in the last four, however, this season she has been in her best form so far since turning pro in 2019. She has a good record of 15 wins and 4 losses this year.
