Emma Raducanu, the US Open champion, is preparing to hire her fourth coach in a year after parting ways with Torben Beltz after only five months, she announced on Tuesday. The 19-year-old is scheduled to compete in the Madrid Open this week as part of her preparations for the French Open, but she stated that she needed a “new training model.”
Iain Bates, the head of women’s coaching for the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), will work with Raducanu this week. She will look to build on her quarter-final appearance in Stuttgart last week, where she was defeated by world number one and eventual winner Iga Swiatek.
Emma Raducanu to collaborate with Riccardo Piatti
Raducanu has had a lot of coaches in the past year since she first made a name for herself by reaching the Wimbledon’s last 16 even before receiving her final school test results. After Wimbledon, she replaced Nigel Sears with Andrew Richardson, but despite Raducanu’s surprising victory at the US Open, Richardson’s contract was not renewed.
Emma Raducanu could opt towards Italian Ricardo Piatti, who has taught the likes of Maria Sharapova, Novak Djokovic, France’s former world number seven, the flamboyant Richard Gasquet, and Milos Raonic, the 2016 Wimbledon finalist. He’s free after parting ways with compatriot Jannik Sinner, whom he helped achieve the top 10 in the men’s world rankings. Also, Raducanu trained at his academy before beginning her clay-court season in April.
“I have enjoyed our strong chemistry”- Emma Raducanu
After parting ways with Torben Beltz, Emma Raducanu issued a statement thanking him for his service. She praised the German for his professionalism as well. The youngster indicated that the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) in the United Kingdom would support her as she transitioned to a “new training model.”
“I want to thank Torben for his coaching, professionalism and dedication over the last half a year,” said Raducanu, who on Monday rose to her highest world ranking of 11. “He has a huge heart and I have enjoyed our strong chemistry during the time together. I feel the best direction for my development is to transition to a new training model with the LTA supporting in the interim.”
Emma Raducanu is set to compete in the Madrid Open
