Former US Open champion Emma Raducanu suffered a freak ankle injury. This made her withdraw from the second round of the ASB Classic as well. The injury happened during her match against Viktoria Kuzmova. She was playing flawlessly in the first set winning 6-0 but Kuzmova took the second set 7-5. The British 20-year-old sought medical support on the third set starting but could not complete the match.
Raducanu was in tears during the match. she also slammed the slippery surface for her fall after the match. The injury scare also makes her participation in the Australian Open a question mark.
She quoted, “I’ve put in a lot of physical work in the last few months, so to be stopped by a freak injury is pretty disappointing. The courts are very slippery, so it’s not a surprise this happened to someone. It’s out of my control and after a very long day of waiting around.”
The 20-year-old had a very difficult 2022 season after a remarkable US Open triumph in 2021. She was trying to regroup this season with a number of coaches changed. The ankle injury sustained during the start of the season will be a huge setback for her. The tennis world is hoping to see the young British back in top form with just 2 weeks left to the Australian Open 2023.
Emma Raducanu’s disappointing 2022 season
The British World number 78 Emma Raducanu failed to pass the second round at all the Grand Slam events in 2022. Anyway, she still holds the Open Era record for the fewest majors played before winning a title. The Brit’s controversial decision-making in keeping a coach also contributed to her poor results. The Brit ended the season without a single qualification in the finals.
She ended her association with four coaches in the past 18 months. Now she appointed former German player Sebastian Sachs as her new coach. She is featured in the entry list for the 2023 Australian Open but is an unseeded player at the tournament.
Despite failing to perform consistently on the WTA Tour, her overall earnings of the year were not affected. The 2021 US Open champion is still earning millions through endorsements and brands. The advertisements comprise a major fragment of her earnings. Emma Raducanu’s earnings from her on-court performances are far less than that.
The 20-year-old is currently ranked 78 with a career win-loss record of 93-44. After winning her first slam in the 2021 US Open, the Brit has disappointed in all of her outings last year. She has no WTA singles titles to her name this year.
