Emma Raducanu continues to struggle for consistency on the Tour. She recently played at the 2024 Indian Wells Open, courtesy of a wildcard. The World No. 288 made good use of it reaching the third round.
She was eventually defeated by World No. 2 and last year’s finalist Aryna Sabalenka. As a result, she is yet to win a match against a Top-10 opponent. Raducanu was ranked 250th in the world going to the tennis paradise. However, with another early loss, she slips down 38 places.
The former US Open winner showed some good tennis in Indian Wells. Even against Sabalenka, she had her moments of brilliance. Well, they weren’t enough. As fans hoped she could continue the good form in the coming days, Raducanu has come up with heartbreaking news for the fans.
Having received the wildcard, the former World No. 10 has made a last-minute withdrawal from the 2024 Miami Open. She was scheduled to play against Wang Xiyu in the first round. However, due to a lower back injury, she has been forced to withdraw from the WTA-1000 event.
Raducanu has been replaced by Anna Schmiedlova in the main-draw. The Slovakian makes her way into the main-draw after winning both of her qualifying matches.
All hopes on Katie Boulter following Emma Raducanu’s withdrawal
As Raducanu opts to withdraw from the tournament, the British challenge in Miami will solely be the responsibility of Katie Boulter. The World No. 30 has been in good form lately and can certainly make a deep run. She won her biggest career title at the 2024 San Diego Open, a WTA-500 event.
But to the disappointment of many, she lost in the first round in Indian Wells. She has however received a bye in Miami due to her seeding. She will begin her campaign in the second round against the winner of the clash between Brenda Fruhvirtova and Maria Carle.
As for Raducanu, she will hope to recover well in time before the Clay season begins. She has already signed up for the WTA-500 clay event in Stuttgart which is sponsored by Porsche, one of her sponsors.
With the Stuttgart Open starting on 15th April and the Miami Open finishing on 31st March, it looks likely the Briton will not sign up for any other event. But an official confirmation is still awaited.
