Leylah Fernandez is having a tough time on the court after her 2021 US Open heroics. She made it to the final of the Grand Slam in New York. However, she lost to eventual champion Emma Raducanu. This year she won the Monterrey Open title and reached the quarter-finals of the French Open. She could not play as well as she did last time in the US Open and lost to Liudmila Samsonova in the second round. She finished the year as No.40 in the WTA rankings.

The Canadian is hoping to make a strong comeback the next season. She is playing some exhibition matches to maintain her fitness levels. In a similar exhibition match, former World No.1 Kim Clijsters defeated her.

Kim Clijsters is one of the legends of the sport. She has won four Grand Slam titles during her career- US Open in 2005, 2009, and 2010 and the Australian Open in 2011. The Belgian won two Grand Slam doubles titles- French Open and Wimbledon with Japanese player Ai Sugiyama in 2003. Her successes on the court helped got her inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Her career was plagued with lots of injuries which forced her to take retirement at the young age of 24. She stayed out of action for two years. She came back strongly and won four Grand Slam titles after that till 2012. She also gained her No.1 rank.

She again decided to retire in 2012. But she could not remain out of action for long and came back to court after 7 years. She could not impress anyone. She decided to retire in April this year. However, she continues to play exhibition matches. She has come back successfully to play and compete in professional tournaments, more than once. Hence, whenever she is seen playing tennis, rumors begin to circulate of her possible return.
