Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti has followed in the footsteps of Novak Djokovic by copying Ben Shelton’s ‘phone call’ celebration from the US Open after his doubles victory in the ongoing Davis Cup. After Italy’s shocking defeat against Canada, they desperately needed a victory against Chile, and they got just that. They beat Chile 3-0, and with this, their hopes for a spot in the Final 8 are still alive.
In the first match of the tie between Italy and Chile, Matteo Arnaldi registered a sensational comeback win over Christian Garin as he defeated the Chilean 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, which made Italy 1-0 up. The second match was between Lorenzo Sonego of Italy and Nicolas Jarry of Chile. That too ended in a comeback victory for the Italian, as he won the match 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.
In the third and final match of the tie, the men’s doubles team of Lorenzo Musetti and Lorenzo Sonego took on Tomas Barrios Vera and Alejandro Tabilo. After registering a sensational win in the third set that went into the tie-breaker, Lorenzo Musetti dropped the Ben Shelton celebration.
It is the same celebration that Ben Shelton dropped in his US Open quarterfinal match after beating Frances Tiafoe. Later, Novak Djokovic copied the celebration after defeating Shelton in the semifinal. With Lorenzo Musetti copying this celebration again in the Davis Cup, it is clear that it has become pretty famous and trendy in the world of tennis.
