Novak Djokovic has qualified for the Nitto ATP finals for the 15th time in his career. But his qualification criteria grabbed everyone’s eyeballs since he hasn’t been consistent on the Tour and stood outside the qualification race. He qualified under the Grand Slam champion provision that awards entry to a current-year major winner who finishes between 8th and 20th in the ATP Race To Turin.
The former World No 1 has had a tough year starting from his deportation prior to the start of the Australian Open and hence failed to defend his title. He made a late start to the year and even failed to defend his title at the French Open. Despite many lows, he clinched the 7th Wimbledon for the 4th successive year.
But the Serbian’s qualification on the basis of his Wimbledon triumph was questioned by various individuals. They criticized the fact that his special qualification took away some other players’ positions for the final tournament of the year.
One of the renowned journalists took to his Twitter account to express his disappointment at the special privilege shown to the Serbian legend. He tweeted as “The famous rule that qualifies Djokovic at the Nitto ATP Finals has existed for years, has been applied a few times and no one has ever spoken. Now problems arise. Anyone could have won Wimbledon and used this rule. Enough to make you look ridiculous right now“.

The 21-time Grand Slam winner couldn’t play at the North American swing because of his unvaccinated status. But Djokovic is on a 9-match winning streak post the US Open winning two back-to-back ATP singles titles at the Tel Aviv Open and at the Astana Open.
The 2022 Wimbledon winner faced a lot of backlash over being qualified for the Year-end championship. But some even pointed out the fact that he deserves to get a chance to play for being one of the greatest players of the sport. Some even stated that his credibility cannot be questioned and that he need not prove anything to be a Top 20 player.
