Wimbledon is one of the four major tournaments in tennis. It is the oldest and one of the most prestigious Grand Slams in the tennis calendar year. Starting in 1877, the prestigious tournament is known to hold all the traditions even in the modern era.

This tournament is played on a Grass court and is also known as ‘The Championships’. Every male and female tennis player who participates in the tournament must wear all the white clothes on the court.

But this tradition has come under fire in recent years. Many female tennis players have complained that they could not wear white clothes on the court during their menstruation period, as it can lead to multiple embarrassing moments for them during a match. The tradition accounts that all clothes, including underpants and underwear, must also be white. However, this can be an issue. The female players could not concentrate on their game, which could affect their performance on the court.

The All-England Tennis Club (which organizes Wimbledon every year) has now taken cognizance of the complaints. The news reports confirm Wimbledon has allowed all female tennis players to wear mild-colored underpants during the competition in 2023.

With this decision, the organizers of the competition tried to soothe the anxieties of the female players. They are also trying to keep the tradition of playing in white clothes on grass alive. So, this compromise has been deemed necessary.

However, it will be interesting to note how the players especially, female players will take notice of this tinkering in rules. The authorities have for now stemmed the vigor of the increasing pressure of changing the dress code, but soon there will be demands to do away with the white traditional dress code.
