Former American tennis ace John McEnroe has been in the broadcasting business for a long time now but his struggles with pronouncing players’ names is real. The 64-year-old especially struggles to pronounce Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev‘s name as he often refers to the Russian as ‘Daniel’. McEnroe also struggles to pronounce Stefanos Tsitsipas‘ name.
The struggles were evident when McEnroe was commentating during the 2024 Australian Open Final with Daniil Medvedev playing against Jannik Sinner. Fans were quick to notice the problem and then highlight it on social media. In fact, many looked miffed with this botching of names from McEnroe.
Tennis fans claim that McEnroe should learn how to pronounce names as it is a part of his job. Social media platform X was filled with reactions criticizing McEnroe over his lackluster work. Check out the reactions below.

While mispronouncing names is a persistent issue with John McEnroe, there is another major problem with the American commentating. McEnroe has been often called out for his lack of research about players before coming to the job and it flared up again when he openly admitted knowing nothing about Zizou Bergs.
As the World No. 129 got a chance to lock horns with Stefanos Tsitsipas in the opening round of the 2024 Australian Open, McEnroe openly admitted that he knew nothing about Bergs. This led to criticism of the American commentator as players as well as journalists called him out for his ignorant behavior.
American tennis player Thai Son Kwiatkowski criticized McEnroe as he claimed that such ignorant behavior is disrespectful to the players.
Insane to me that time and time again J. McEnroe goes on air and just admits he has zero clue who a player is. (Today, bergs, 120 atp) just says to the world, hey guys, I’ve done zero research for my job and I’m just going to disrespect someone who’s top 150 in the world at a job.Thai Son Kwiatkowski wrote on X.
Fellow commentators and journalists tore McEnroe apart for his lackluster job. They claimed that not doing proper research before coming to the job is disrespectful to all the stakeholders involved. Despite such severe criticism, there has been no apology from McEnroe.
