Serbian legend Novak Djokovic had a perfect end to his 2022 campaign by winning the Year-end Championship for the sixth time. Moreover, he is part of Team Falcons at the inaugural edition of the World Tennis League. He was up against Nick Kyrgios of Team Eagles in the much-anticipated clash at the Coco Cola Arena in Dubai. But, the Serb’s decision to back off last minute did not go down well with the fans present in the stadium.
It had been a tough year for the World No 5 due to his Covid-19 vaccination status which forced him to skip tournaments. It all started with his deportation on the eve of his match at the Australian Open. But Djokovic managed to put a sensational form winning 18 out of his last 19 matches. He was the undefeated champion at the ATP Finals. Also, his visa ban has been revoked which will grant him permission to participate in Down Under in 2023 after two years.
The 21-time Grand Slam champion made the decision after stating that he isn’t feeling 100 percent fit to play. As soon as Novak Djokovic opted out, his Bulgarian team-mate Grigor Dimitrov played against the Aussie. Dimitrov went ahead to defeat Team Eagles’ opponent in straight sets.
It was the second match for the former World No 1 in Dubai. He had lost his first match against Alexander Zverev. Despite not playing, he was spotted supporting his teammate as he sat with his team on the court. His move was not appreciated by all since he had stated about not being well.
