Felix Auger Aliassime achieves childhood dream as he leads Canada to maiden Davis Cup title

Canada won their maiden Davis Cup trophy after defeating Australia 2-0 in the final of the 2022 Davis Cup in Malaga, Spain. This is the second time Canada played the Davis Cup in its sporting history. The last time, they reached this stage was in 2019 when they were beaten by Spain.
Felix Auger Aliassime won the last match of the Davis Cup 2022 by defeating Australia’s Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-4 to give an unconquerable lead of 2-0 to Canada. In the previous match, Denis Shapovalov also won his match against Thanasi Kokkinakis, earning Canada a 1-0 lead over Australia.
“The emotions are tough to describe,” an overjoyed Auger-Aliassime said.
“Denis and I grew up together dreaming of these types of stage, dreaming of winning the Davis Cup. It’s a great moment for myself and for the country,” he further added.
Australia has won this title 28 times. This was also the 48th time, they have reached the Final of the Davis Cup. However, this was the first Final they played since 2003.

Canada has made great strides in the recent few years. Many talented players such as Felix Auger-Aliassime, Denis Shapovalov, Bianca Andreescu, and Leylah Annie Fernandez amongst others have lit the world stage. This particular victory will be an important step in the right direction for tennis in Canada. Denis Shapovalov summarized the importance of this triumph.
“Two tough losses this week and I’m very happy with the way I played today to get the win,” he said.
“It helped me being in the final before. Last time it was all kind of new, we were relieved just to be there but today we’re very much going for the trophy. It was tough to lose in 2019, it was an empty feeling and we wanted it badly this time,” he described his feelings.
Vasek Pospisil, the Canadian veteran, described this win in his own words.
“We’ve been dreaming about this for several years. To be here as world champions I’m speechless. These guys are not kids any more. They’ve been crushing it. You can’t win this event without tremendous team chemistry,” he said.
Canada was relegated from the tournament after losing to The Netherlands in the Qualifiers. They got a lifeline when the defending champions Russia and Belarus were banned from participating in the 122-year-old tournament by the International Tennis Federation. They stood second behind Spain in their Group. This week they defeated Germany and Italy in the quarter-finals and the semi-finals rounds respectively.
