World No. 10, Felix Auger Aliassime spoke frankly about not taking his name out of running for the French Open. Though the Canadian has not shown a great form in the last couple of months, he looked confident about his chances at winning Roland Garros 2023. He is currently playing Lyon Open, an ATP 250 event ahead of the French Open.
At a press conference in Lyon, Felix spoke to the press about the most likely contender to win at this year’s French Open. Though Felix didn’t miss key names from his competitors, he also showed confidence in his abilities. “Many players have the opportunity to win, myself included.” The 22-year-old talked about his not-so-great form but also stressed how that is not detrimental to his aspirations. Felix said, “Even if lately I haven’t had the results I wanted, I still believe in my chances, I approach every tournament with the confidence that I can go all the way.“
At the press conference at Lyon Open, Felix also talked about how he thinks World No. 1 through 3 have a great chance to win at Roland Garros. Which means Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev. He also mentioned Holger Rune‘s name based on the Dane’s spectacular run this season. Felix said “With what we’ve seen over the last few weeks, I’ll put Alcaraz in the favorites, Djokovic too, we know how good he can be in Grand Slams. After why not Medvedev , Rune , that’s more compared to the last results.
Felix believes a lot of unpredictable factors play into a big tournament like the French Open. He said that injuries, health, and draws play a crucial role in deciding the ultimate winner. “In such a long tournament, we know that many things can happen. The health of the players, the table, we know that anything can happen.“

Felix Auger Aliassime’s run so far in 2023

2023 has not been too kind to Felix Auger. Out of the 21 matches he has played, he has lost 9 and won only 12. This put his win percentage in 2023 at 57%. This is low as compared to 69% in 2022. Felix’s name has always been pegged in the next-gen group who are taking tennis forward. But his second-round exits in the last two Majors, i.e. the Italian Open and the Madrid Open, have cast doubt over his future. He has lost to Alexei Popyrin twice this year.
It started with his loss in the first round of the Adelaide Open to Alexei Popyrin. In the Sunshine doubles he had a decent run, but he lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals of Indian Wells. In Miami Open he lost in the third round to Francisco Cerundolo, who has also been in a great form.
The tennis fraternity had hoped for better results from Felix in 2023, leading up to the good year he had in 2022. His current coach Toni Nadal had said his speed is one of the best tools that others don’t have. Patrick Mouratoglou, who has been his mentor, declared that he is a threat to everyone before the beginning of the clay season. So far things haven’t gone his way but hope things change at French Open for this Canadian.
