World No.4 Jannik Sinner revealed his trepidation over facing either Novak Djokovic or Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the Nitto ATP Finals. The home hero at Turin defeated former World No.1 Daniil Medvedev in a three-setter. It is a relief for the 22-year-old to make it to the final. However, one of his biggest opponents at the year-ender is waiting for him, no matter the result of the semi-final clash between the No.1 and No.2 players.

Jannik Sinner has been making waves in tennis, especially after his maiden Masters 1000 clash at the Canadian Open. He had one of his most impressive runs since after his fourth-round exit at the US Open. Starting with a title-winning run at the China Open, it has only been going up for the Italian. He is the only undefeated player at the year-end finals. He had defeated the likes of Novak Djokovic and Holger Rune, both in three sets, to make it to the semi-final. His semifinal match against Medvedev saw him registering yet another win against the Russian. The match had a competitive first and second set and a dominant third set. Sinner won with a score of 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 to move on to the final.

He will now be playing the final against the winner of the semifinal match against Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz. He revealed that while it is truly a win to celebrate, he is certainly cautious of his next opponent. Sinner said in a press conference at Turin:

I'm careful about everything when I play against the No.1 or No.2 in the world. Tough matches are coming up. Not so much time to enjoy this moment because tomorrow is going to be a tough match.

However, he was also clear that he was looking forward to playing either player.

Sinner also admitted that it would be a privilege to play against any one of them. The 22-year-old said:

I feel privileged to play against Novak or against Carlos. It's going to be a tough match, I'm looking forward to it.

He was also hopeful that it would be a quality contest between himself and whoever his opponent would be. Sinner becomes the first Italian to reach the final of the ATP Finals. If he does win the title, he will become the first Italian to do it and will go down in the history books.

Jannik Sinner talks about the unique format at the ATP Finals

The ATP year-end finals are one of the only tournaments to follow a round-robin format. This indicates that while one might lose in a round-robin match, one might still be able to win the title. One such example of a title after defeat is Alexander Zverev, in both his title-winning campaigns at the event. Jannik Sinner seemed to be quite appreciative yet apprehensive of the fact, even though he remains undefeated at this year’s version of the event.

The 22-year-old is waiting on the semi-final match between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz. This will determine his opponent at the season-ender. While both players have seen defeat at the hands of the home hero, Djokovic was his most recent triumph, when he defeated the Serb at the round-robin stage of the ATP Finals. However, this result does not matter, for the final will be a new day, with the scales ready to tip in either direction.

Sinner said:

The previous matches don't matter. Especially with this format, you can win against one, but after you can lose.

However, he also admitted that he is happy simply to play on the courts of his home country one more time. Jannik Sinner has once again proved his quality. He made it to the finals in his maiden qualification at the event. However, it is not his first stint here. He has previously played at the year-ender in 2021 as an alternate.
