Serena Williams

23-time grand slam champion Serena Williams has started her farewell journey on a very high note. She announced a few weeks ago that she will be retiring soon and the US Open will be her last professional tournament. She looked completely out of form before the US Open and many expected her to crash out in the first round at Flushing Meadows.

But to everyone’s surprise, Serena not only defeated Danka Kovinic in the opener, she then stunned World No.2 Anett Kontaveit in the second round in three sets 7-6(4),2-6,6-2 to register her 108th match win at the US Open. She will now take on Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round on Friday night.

The stakes are very high in every match that Serena plays given that every match could be the last possible match of her illustrious tennis career. Needless to say, fans go out in huge numbers to see Serena play for one last time. In both the matches she has played so far this week, we have witnessed a record-breaking packed crowd at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Given the stakes, the USTA too isn’t holding up and is continuously increasing the ticket prices for Serena’s game. Reportedly, the lowest price for a Friday night session on the Arthur Ashe Stadium, where Serena plays, is a mammoth $553. This is a around 150% hike in the last 24 hours and such numbers are unheard of in the third round of a grand slam.
