When asked about Noah Lyles comment on NBA players calling themselves ‘World Champions’, fellow American Frances Tiafoe, said that particular quote has indeed been on his mind the whole time. “I was literally talking about that all car ride coming here, because it’s crazy, bro. I get what he was saying but I don’t get what he was saying. You know what I’m saying,” he said while responding in a press conference.

“Because it’s the best league in the world, NBA. You can argue the three, four best players in the NBA are not American at the moment,” said Tiafoe, defending his country’s one of the favorite pastimes. He also said that one could argue that there are barely a few non-American players in the league, so it cannot be an international event.

“The best foreign players are playing in the NBA. But then on the flip side, yeah, it’s played in the States. So I get both sides but I’m definitely probably leaning more to all the hoopers’ responses, for sure,” said the American. Whilst the league is being played in the States, it doesn’t make it any less of a World Championship, reduced Tiafoe.

While the sprinter’s quote has not gone amiss by fans, it has received both positive and negative reactions. Other sportspersons, including Kevin Durant, Damian Lillard, and other NBA players, have reacted to this quote as well.

World No. 10 Frances Tiafoe has always been the underdog in tennis. But with his performance at the last few tournaments, expectations have started to build on the American’s shoulders.

Starting with a quarter-final appearance at the Paris Masters 2022, his career has been on the up-scale. He continued to prove himself with semi-final finishes at both the US Open 2022 as well as the Indian Wells Masters 2023.

Tiafoe continues to be the dark horse, as some believe he has the ability to make or break the tournament this year. With his consistent streak and current form, this might as well be the case. The American has stormed past Learner Tien in the opening round of the tournament, as he is set to face Sebastian Ofner in the second round.
