Frances Tiafoe says Roger Federer ‘has a lot to apologize’ after ‘beating everybody’ for 24 years
Roger Federer and Frances Tiafoe
Team World member Frances Tiafoe has said he did not apologize to Roger Federer after beating him in doubles at the Laver Cup, adding jokingly that the Swiss maestro himself had “a lot to apologize after the last 24 years, beating everybody.”
“He’s a class act. Happy to know him, happy to call him friend, happy to call him a colleague, and best wishes in his second act. But I will not apologize,” Tiafoe added.
Tiafoe made the comments during a press conference after Team World’s victory over Team Europe at the 2022 Laver Cup in London on Sunday, in which he played a pivotal role. Team World won the Laver Cup for the first time in the competition’s five-edition history.

Tiafoe also added more praise for Federer, saying, “No, I won’t apologize, but I will say thank you for having me in this amazing event, you know, what he’s done for the game, also say thank you for what he did for the game.”
The American had doubled up with Team World’s Jack Sock to beat Federer and Rafael Nadal on Friday, following which the Swiss great was carried atop all players on their shoulders in a tearful tribute.
Tiafoe criticized for ‘racist’ remarks
Later on Sunday, Tiafoe sealed the win for Team World with a tight singles victory over Team Europe’s Stefanos Tsitsipas. However, some Twitter users accused the American of being ‘racist’ during the contest.
During the match, Tiafoe had apparently made an indirect reference to Tsitsipas saying “I’m gonna own that Greek yogurt”.
The 2022 Laver Cup was probably one of the most sought-after editions in the event’s history, with the Big 4 all present and part of Team Europe i.e. Djokovic, Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Andy Murray.
In all previous editions, Team World had their chances in the competition but almost always fell short of completing an upset. In recent times, Europe has dominated world tennis with Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro being the only player from outside who was consistently able to beat the top four.
However, del Potro had his career cut short by a wrist injury followed by a broken knee cap incident from which he was never able to fully recover. In fact, the Argentine recently expressed regret about not being able to play again, saying his personal life had also suffered as he was not capable of driving for long hours after the knee injury.
