Francisco Clavet opens up on possible outcomes at the Davis Cup 2022

Carlos Alcaraz, Rafael Nadal

Francisco Clavet, the assistant director of the Davis Cup talked about the fixtures at the Davis Cup and even mentioned that the tournament would fare well without superstars like Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic representing their countries, he said that a matchup between the two players also seems quite difficult.

Clavet said, “There are very good players in all countries, although not all of them have superstars like Spain (Nadal) or Serbia (Djokovic), it is promoted through the format that this upper-middle class achieves results, and you have to add double, which is of vital importance. If you have a good double, you have won a lot. Thus, it is nice, it creates uncertainty and the same ones do not always win. It is good for the sport. We would all love to have a Nadal-Djokovic, but it’s frankly difficult.”

In an interview with Marca, Clavet added that having Carlos Alcaraz would be a huge draw as well, he said, “In any case, we would like to have Carlitos Alcaraz, who is the great sensation in world tennis.”

Spain and Serbia are drawn into the same group as Canada and South Korea, and according to Clavet, a finals match-up between Nadal and Djokovic might not happen as they will be facing tough competition from the two other countries in their group. Canada has Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov and South Korea would fare well too.
