Novak Djokovic vs Rafael Nadal: Preview
After having the worst possible start to the season, Novak Djokovic has finally peaked in time. The Serb wasn’t allowed to enter Australia due to his vaccination status and hence didn’t defend his Australian Open title. He started his season in Dubai where he made it to the quarterfinals. He was once again denied entry into the USA and hence was forced to miss the Golden Swing. He then had a terrible start to the clay season where he lost his first match at Monte Carlo. He finished runner-up in Belgrade before reaching the semifinals of the Madrid Masters and eventually winning the Rome Masters.
He was been absolutely ruthless this week in Paris. He is yet to drop a set and defeated the likes of Yoshihito Nishioka and Alex Molcan in the opening rounds before beating Aljaz Bedene in the third round. He then blasted past 15th seed Diego Schwartzman in the fourth round in straight sets 6-1,6-3,6-3.
As for Rafael Nadal, he had a surprisingly good start to the 2022 season. Coming from an injury, he won the Melbourne Summer Set before winning a historic 21st grand slam title in Melbourne. He continued his winning streak and won the Mexican Open without dropping a set. He then reached the final of the Indian Wells Masters before losing to Taylor Fritz. He then found out that he has a hairline rib fracture which ruled him out for a month. He returned to the tour at Madrid only to lose to Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinal. He then had a shocking Round of 16 exit at the Rome Masters.
Nadal cruised through the opening rounds at the French Open, beating the likes of Jordan Thompson, Corentin Moutet, and, Botic van de Zandschulp. He then had to dig deep and was pushed to the limit by 9th seed Felix Auger Aliassime in five sets 3-6,6-3,6-2,3-6,6-3.
Novak Djokovic vs Rafael Nadal: Head-to-Head
This will be a record 59th meeting between the duo. Djokovic leads the H2H 30-28. They last met at the French Open last year where Djokovic won in 4 sets.
Novak Djokovic vs Rafael Nadal: Prediction
Probably for the first time in 18 years, Nadal won’t be an overwhelming favorite in a match played at Roland Garros. Despite being the greatest clay-court player of all time, Nadal is currently not in his prime, and there is still uncertainty about his fitness levels. He even struggled on serve against Felix and had a bit of restricted movement. As for Djokovic, he has been nothing but ruthless this tournament and has peaked exactly when it mattered. He is currently the best player in the world and looks unstoppable. But the only player who could stop him is probably Nadal.
The Spaniard has ruled Court Phillipe Chatrier for almost two decades now and everyone knows the magic he could produce. “I don’t know about the result but one thing is for sure, I will fight till the end,” Nadal said ahead of his quarterfinal clash against Djokovic and we expect nothing less from the ‘King of Clay’. Expect fireworks on the court as two titans collide for tennis greatness. Djokovic just might have enough fuel in the tank to cross the finish line.
Prediction: Djokovic to win in 5 sets.
