Rafael Nadal has proven to the world why he is one of the greatest athletes in all sports. Coming back from a terrible leg injury, he started the season by winning the Melbourne Summer Set and then came back from the dead to win the Australian Open- his record 21st major title. He then won the Mexican Open and reached the final of the Indian Wells Masters only to find out that he has a hairline rib fracture. He returned after a month at Madrid but couldn’t get past the quarterfinals. He then bowed out of the Round of 16 of the Rome Masters because of his chronic foot condition.

This week in Paris, he eased past Jordan Thompson, Corentin Moutet, and Botic van de Zandschulp in the initial rounds before winning against Felix Auger Aliassime in a 5-set thriller. Against all odds, he then defeated his arch-rival and defending champion Novak Djokovic in four sets 6-2,4-6,6-2,7-6(5).

Alexander Zverev had a decent start to the season with a Round of 16 outing at the Australian Open. He then made it to the final of ATP Marseille before getting kicked out of the Mexican Open due to his inappropriate behavior. He followed it up by losing his opening match at the Indian Wells Masters but bounced back by reaching the quarterfinals at Miami Masters. He also reached the semifinal of the Monte Carlo Masters but lost his opening match at Munich. He then reached the final of the Madrid Open and made it to the semifinal of the Italian Open.

At the French Open, he defeated Sebastian Ofner in the opening round before surviving a second-round scare by Sebastian Baez. He then had a couple of good outings against Brandon Nakashima and Bernabe Zapata Miralles before eating 6th seed Carlo Alcaraz in the quarterfinals in four sets 6-4,6-4,4-6,7-6(7).

Even on paper, despite being the higher-ranked player, Nadal will be the favorite to start the match. This will be his 15th semifinal at the French Open and hence it is obvious how good a relationship he has with Roland Garros. He rules the Parisian clay which was evident by the level of tennis he played against Djokovic. Zverev too has been amazing all fortnight long and will fancy his chances to rewrite history books by beating Nadal on Chatrier. Expect a very tight match with Nadal losing to Zverev.
