King of Clay Rafael Nadal has returned to his favourite hunting ground up and running as he enters the third round with consecutive straight-set wins. After defeating Jordan Thompson in the first round, he took down local boy Corentin Moutet 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 to pick his 107th win in his 110th match at the Grand Slam. It was also his 300th win in Grand Slam events entering the 300-win club behind Novak Djokovic (325) and Roger Federer (369).

Botic van de Zanschulp reaches the third round of the French Open for the first time although it is just his second main-draw appearance. The Dutchman defeated Pavel Kotov in 4-sets in the first round and then saw Fabio Fognini retire mid-match in the third set although Botic had won the first two sets and was leading in the third set as well. After reaching the finals in Munich Open, Botic had difficulties in the next events but has shrugged them off in Paris as he now makes it 7-2 in matches played at the Stade Roland Garros.

Rafael Nadal vs Botic van de Zandschulp: Prediction

Rafael Nadal

Botic will come into the tie with a career claycourt record of 140-74 and is 11-5 on the surface this season while having a season record of 19-12 across all surfaces. Rafa will take the court with a career claycourt record of 288-29 and is 5-2 on the surface this season while having a 25-3 season record so far.

Looking at these numbers and considering their form in the 2022 season, Botic can cause trouble to Nadal during the match but given the Spaniard’s dominance at the tournament and the disciplined performances in the past two rounds, it looks like Rafa will be the first player among the two to take a lead in the head-to-head.

Prediction: Rafael Nadal to win in 4-sets.
