Probably for the first time in years, Rafael Nadal maynot be the overwhelming favorite to win the French Open. Despite a dream start to the season, Nadal hasn’t had any luck with fitness. He started the year by winning three back-to-back titles including his 21st major title in Melbourne. He then also reached the final of the Indian Wells Masters before developing a hairline rib fracture which ruled him out for a month.

He returned in action at th Madrid Masters where he lost in the quarterfinals. He then bowed out of the Round of 16 of the Italian Open where he lost to Denis Shapovalov.

Jordan Thompson has had a very poor season so far. He bowed out of the first round of the Australian Open before reaching the quarterfinal of the Dallas Open. A string of initial round losses at Delray Beach, Indian Wells, and Miami followed. In the European clay season, he is yet to win a match and has played three tournaments- Barcelona Open, Estoril Open, and Zagreb Open.

Despite his uncertain injury status, Nadal will be the favorite to win this match and clear all opening hurdles. He is feeling much better physically and given his record on the Parisian clay, he will fancy an easy outing. Thompson, on the other hand, is yet to deliver big on clay. So expect an easy match for Rafa if he serves well and satys on par with his fitness.
