Iga Swiatek vs Karolina Muchova: Preview

Defending champion Iga Swiatek is back in the French Open finals. Up against Brazilian hotshot Beatriz Haddad Maia, Swiatek was tested well but not defeated as she won the match 6-2, 7-6(7). After cruising in the first set, many thought Swiatek will quickly wrap it up as always. Maia however different plans as she delayed the Pole’s victory but delaying was all she could do.
Swiatek is now into her third Roland Garros final. With straight-set wins in both the previous finals, she will look for a similar feat on Saturday as well. ‘Chef’ Swiatek hasn’t served any bagel since the third round but her dominant and attacking play has been consistent. The knack of getting the early breaks has been helping her well as she comes looking for Major number four.
Karolina Muchova’s romance in Paris continues. Up against World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka, the Czech looked set for a straight-set finish. Sabalenka however battled well to force a third set and found herself leading 5-2 in the third. Muchova did not give up and despite having to defend a match point, she held her fort to make it 5-5. Sabalenka’s confidence looked shattered as she lost the last two games cheaply to hand Muchova the ticket to her maiden Major final with a 7-6(5), 6-7(7), 7-5 win.
Prior to this year’s run, Muchova was yet to go past the third round at the Roland Garros. She has however fought valiantly this year. The win over Sabalenka has guaranteed her new career high as she sits on the 16th spot in live rankings. A win over Swiatek will take her inside the Top 10 for the very first time in her career.
Muchova and Swiatek have met just once so far on the Tour. Their only meeting took place in the first round of the 2019 Prague Open where Muchova was a wildcard entrant and Swiatek reached the main draw as a qualifier. Muchova clinched the win in three sets and holds a 1-0 lead in the head-to-head.
Iga Swiatek vs Karolina Muchova: Prediction

Coming into the finals, Karolina Muchova is 10-2 on Clay this year while having a 62-33 career record. Swiatek on the other hand is 18-2 for the season and 110-16 in all her career matches on Clay. Swiatek is yet to drop a set this fortnight with Maia being the first to even force a tiebreaker against the Pole. Muchova has dropped two sets so far in Paris.
She conceded a bagel in the second round to Nadia Podoroska and then lost the tiebreaker to Sabalenka in the semis. The numbers and overall form do hint toward a Swiatek win, it would be foolish to say Muchova won’t even put up a fight. Expect a close battle as Muchova’s fighting spirit won’t let Swiatek steamroll her.
Match Prediction: Iga Swiatek to win in 3 sets
