Former World No. 1 Garbine Muguruza‘s absence from the WTA Tour has now extended to nearly 15 months. She last played at the 2023 Lyon Open, losing in the first round itself. It was her sixth consecutive loss on the Tour.
This included her first-round defeat at the 2023 Australian Open. The defeat pinched the Spaniard as it was the first time since her debut in 2013 that she lost in the opening round of the Grand Slam event. Before the start of the 2023 season, Muguruza had finished the 2022 season with a 12-17 record.
The 2023 season was the first instance of Muguruza’s career when she finished a season with a negative record. On all three surfaces, Muguruza had a negative record in 2022. As the streak continued in 2023 as well, she chose to take some time away from the sport.
She later opened up about having mental health issues as well due to her form on the court. In order to stay mentally fresh, she opted to spend some time with her family and return when she feels ready. But since January 2023, the two-time singles Major winner has remained inactive with no plan to return.
She might have, however, dropped a very subtle hint about planning a return soon. The Spanish-Venezuelan player took to her Instagram stories where she was seen playing tennis. Donning an all-black outfit with pink shoes, she could be seen practicing her shots standing close to the net.
As many fans later observed on social media, she had put on weight due to her time away from the court. With more than a year away from the sport, it is natural that the Spaniard’s fitness levels have dropped, and it was quite evident in the video.
Excess weight of Garbine Muguruza sees her getting trolled on social media
As her video went viral on social media, the former French Open winner was targeted by trolls on the internet. She was mocked for her added weight as many compared to the time when she was completely fit and playing on the Tour.
Many others found the situation apt to question her intent to return to the court ever again. The 30-year-old was harshly told by many to retire instead of wishing to make a comeback at such an advanced age for the sport.
Muguruza never confirmed her plan to retire, nor has she made any comment about returning any time soon. Anabel Medina Garrigue, captain of the Spanish BJK Cup team, has shown her confidence in Muguruza making a successful return. But no intention has been so far shown by the former Wimbledon winner.
