Two-times Grand Slam winner Garbine Muguruza was last seen at the Lyon Open earlier this year. However, following her first-round exit, the player decided to go on a hiatus from the sport. Although back in July, she expressed her desire to be back on court in 2024, the player recently stated that she has no intention of returning to competition anytime soon.
The Billie Jean Cup captain for the Spanish team, Anabel Medina Garrigues, recently made some claims about the former World No.1. The Finals for one of the most prestigious tournaments, the Billie Jean King (BJK) Cup, will be held next month. Garrigues, when asked, also talked about former Spanish ace, Muguruza.
Muguruza took a break from tennis following a string of poor performances in several tournaments. She lost all 4 matches she played earlier this year in the month of January.
In a conversation with AS, when asked if she had tried talking to Garbine, Garrigues revealed that she actually does, in fact, talk to her. But not about tennis, she revealed further. “She is in a moment of disconnection, her mind is not on track. She’s taking her time,” Garrigues told the interviewer.
The 41-year-old coach-cum-player nevertheless, also expressed her hopes to see the former French Open winner back on court. “I hope she plays again, I think she is a player who can be at the top of the world rankings for a long time, so I hope she comes back,” she stated. “I hope she also returns to the [Spanish] team,” Garrigues added.
Garbine Muguruza gives a shocking statement about her comeback
Former World No.1 and Spanish ace, Garbine Muguruza, recently expressed her plans to step aside from the tennis court, at least for the time being. In a conversation with Women’s Health Magazine, Muguruza revealed plans about her potential return to tennis anytime soon.
“As of today, I have no intention of returning to competition. My plan right now is to sleep, rest, be with my loved ones, and recover lost time,” the 2017 Wimbledon winner stated. “I don’t see beyond what I’m doing today, tomorrow, and this week,” she said further. She told the magazine that she continues to follow her colleagues and can play tennis sometimes for fun rather than an intensive match. “I’m truly taking a break and trying to stay away from the courts,” she added.
