“Sometimes you have to explode”, Goran Ivanisevic explains Novak Djokovic’s emotional breakdown after winning the Australian Open 2023

Novak Djokovic just won his 10th Australian Open title, defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas today. This victory was significant and emotional for him following his tumultuous phase in Australia last year. The Serb now has 22 Grand Slam titles, equaling his rival in the sport, Rafael Nadal. Given the rough phase that he had to go through on this journey, Djokovic broke down in tears after his dramatic win.

Goran Ivanisevic, Djokovic’s coach, has been a pillar of support for the Serb throughout his several wins. In the press conference that followed, Ivanisevic calls this victory ‘the best,’ even topping Djokovic’s 2021 Australian Open victory, which he won despite an abdominal tear.

Describing Djokovic’s performance, he says, “He is from other space. His brain is working different. I’m with him four years, but it still shocks me how his brain works.” He also added how 97% of the players would have pulled out from the race to finish the tournament if they had the same injury as Djokovic.

Ivanisevic has also explained the reason behind Djokovic’s emotional breakdown at the player’s box. The player, who usually remains calm and on the ground with his emotions, could not hold the same after this victory. This AO title was indeed one of the most special ones for him.

Novak Djokovic’s emotions at Melbourne today speak a thousand words for what the player had to go through over the past year. Djokovic is an anti-vaccination proponent, which led to his ultimate deportation and a temporary ban from Australia during the 2021 Open. This victory means a million things to him, including a solid come-back in Australia after the humiliation last year.

Not many might have expected Djokovic to tear down after a victory. However, his coach Goran Ivanisevic explains the reasons behind the Serb’s burst of emotions. “Everything, he’s keeping everything inside. Sometimes you have to explore. Surprisingly he was very quiet for one set and a half. He didn’t say one word for the final. He letted everything out,” says Ivanisevic, explaining Djokovic’s sudden burst of emotions.

“It was very emotional, very emotional for us, very emotional for him. It’s a great achievement. It was really tough three weeks for him. He managed to overcome everything,” Ivanisevic further added. Djokovic had also suffered from a hamstring injury a few weeks back, which had laid uncertainty about his play at the Australian Open. However, he did last through the entirety of the tournament while wearing a thick strapping around his injured area.
