It has been a bad last couple of days for the Serbia tennis team and management, having crashed out of the semi-finals of the Davis Cup. The players were devastated by losing 2-1 to eventual champions Italy but just a few hours later; they were hit with yet another setback. The Serbian team failed to receive a wildcard entry into the last eight of the 2024 Davis Cup.
The Serbian team has to play through the qualifiers to make it to the last eight and they are set to face Slovakia. On the other hand, the management has decided to hand over wildcard entries to Great Britain and Spain instead. Spain, this season failed to make it to the last eight of the tournament which resulted in a very low number of fans in the Malaga stadium.
With the Martin Carpena Hall hosting next year’s tournament as well, the Spanish people would want to see their team participate in the last eight. The organizers also would want to benefit from this competition in terms of revenues, and Spain’s involvement in the business end of the competition would attract local supporters.
The reason that forced the organizers to hand a wildcard to Great Britain instead of Serbia
The organizers of the Davis Cup have been very practical with their decision to hand over the wildcard entry to Great Britain rather than Serbia. Due to the presence of fans English men in the region of Andalucia, the organizers decided to give the Great Britain team the other wildcard.
A large number of British pensioners live in Andalucia and also love the sport. Hence, it is expected that they would be desperate to watch a competition like the Davis Cup.
With the growing number of spectators, the organizers will benefit from the money they will collect from the hotels and restaurants near the stadium and also from the match ticket revenue. Keeping the financial aspect in mind, the organizers had neglected sports, with Novak Djokovic and his men left to suffer the consequences.
