History was made at the third-round match between Greet Minnen and Daria Kasatkina at Flushing Meadows. This was the first time two openly gay players played against each other at a Grand Slam tournament.

Although this match was one for the history books, unfortunately, only one player came out triumphant. In this case, it was the World No. 14, Daria Kasatkina. However, this does not make the landmark any less significant. Minnen seemed to understand this landmark, for then she resorted to Twitter (now called X) to comment on the match. “It was a pleasure,” she tweeted, alongside the rainbow emoji. Although the 26-year-old Belgian lost to Kasatkina, she still expressed how grateful she was for this particular event.

Minnen started turning heads at the US Open when she defeated former World No.1 and 7-time Grand Slam champ Venus Williams. Unfortunately, the Belgian’s promising streak could not continue. She faced a loss against 13th seed Daria Kasatkina.

This is the Belgian’s best finish at a Grand Slam tournament. This, however, did not seem to deter her spirits as she conveyed how appreciative she was of having been able to be a part of this magnificent event.

Daria Kasatkina defeated Greet Minnen in the third round at Flushing Meadows, moving on to the fourth round. There she will be facing off against second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka in the fourth round. This will be the final step towards her reaching the quarter-final, her best-ever finish at the US Open.

With 13 WTA singles titles under her belt, the Russian will prove to be a tough competition against the current World No.2. Sabalenka, who has won the 2023 Australian Open, has a staggering 31 WTA titles to her name. Both players would aim to play their best game in the fourth round match on 4th September. They will both aim to get the better of the other, both trying to make their way into the quarter-final of the tournament.
