Italy’s young sensation Jannik Sinner kicked off his 2023 Wimbledon Championships campaign against Juan Manuel Cerundolo on the Centre Court on Monday (July 3). Though Sinner broke no sweat while beating the Argentine, what caught the attention of the tennis fans was his duffle bag especially customized by the fashion giant, Gucci, which featured the brand’s famous GG monogram.
According to Gucci, Sinner became the first player to take a bag made by a luxury brand at Wimbledon. For this, the fashion brand had to take permission from Wimbledon, as well as from the ITF and ATP. It’s well known how Wimbledon follows strict rules when it comes to dress code. Last year, Australia’s Nick Kyrgios showed off his red Air Jordans and a baseball cap at the All England Club and broke the rule.
“For sure this will create a conversation. Bringing sport and luxury fashion together in this way is something that’s never been done before and I feel extremely proud to be a part of it. I hope people will love it as much as I do,” Sinner said (via Daily Mail).
The 21-year-old became Gucci’s brand ambassador in 2022. He was also featured in a video by Gucci’s campaign ‘A Hero’s Journey’. Notably, Sinner is not the only brand ambassador of Gucci in the tennis world, but he is the first one to flaunt the brand at Wimbledon. Tennis legends Serena Williams and Roger Federer also have links with Gucci but they never carried the brand’s accessories on the court.
Jannik Sinner will face Diego Schwartzman in the next round
After breezing past Juan Manuel Cerundolo in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, 6-2, Jannik Sinner will face another Argentine, Diego Schwartzman, in the next round. Sinner has defeated Schwartzman three times in their three encounters.
Their first encounter was in 2021 at Antwerp Belgium where Sinner won in straight sets, followed by the 2023 Monte-Carlos Masters where Schwartzman retired during the match. Their last meeting was at the 2023 Barcelona Open, where Sinner again came out strongly to beat the Argentine in straight sets.
Meanwhile, Sinner arrived at the Wimbledon Open following a quarterfinal loss to Alexander Bublik in the Halle Open. The World No.8 has just won one title this year, at the Open Sud de France, by beating Maxime Cressy.
