“He broke into the Federer-Nadal-Djokovic trio in their prime” Andre Agassi once HAILED Andy Murray for standing up firmly against the Big 3 dominance

Big 3, Andy Murray and Andre Agassi

A few years back, Andre Agassi lauded Andy Murray for giving a tough time to the Big 3 trio of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic and eventually cementing his place inside the ‘Big 4’. From 2005 onwards, the Big 3 dominated the tour like never before for the next few years and nobody seemed to stand up against them or their level.

Then came Andy Murray who gave a tough fight to the Big 3. He is the only player who has defeated each member of the Big 3 more than 5 times. He defeated Djokovic and Federer 11 times each while getting the better of Nadal 7 times. He was also the World No.1 during the Big 3’s prime and hence, rightly deserved to be in the ‘Big 4’.

Agassi spoke about Murray and said that he is the person who broke into the Federer-Nadal-Djokovic trio in their prime and raised his level to match theirs. He further said that the Big 3 generation was very rough for others to win majors and also claimed that Murray would’ve won almost three times the number of majors he has won if he’d played in Agassi’s generation.

“He was the person that broke into the Federer-Nadal-Djokovic trio in their prime,” Agassi said. “He showed that he can play every bit up on their level. It is a rough generation to win a lot of Grand Slams. If Andy was in my generation he would have had probably three times the career.”

Andre Agassi on why he respects Andy Murray a lot

Agassi said that he respects Murray a lot because he took away things from the Big 3 when they didn’t leave much for him. He called Murray a fighter in concern to his persistent injuries and believed that even in the pain, he’ll fight till the very end.

“Those guys haven’t left much for others but Andy went in there and took it. I only have respect for him. He did, in some cases, against the biggest odds. He is a fighter at heart – you can see it out here, even in pain he is going to fight to the end. That is what you want to see. It is never fun to see him suffer on a tennis court, either emotionally or physically, but he never stopped fighting. That is the thing you have to respect,” he added.
