Novak Djokovic clinched his 7th Wimbledon title, his 4th title in a row to win 21 Grand Slam singles titles overall defeating Nick Kyrgios at the finals of the 2022 Wimbledon Championship. He remains undefeated at the All England Club extending his winning streak to 28. With his win, he surpassed Roger Federer‘s tally of 20 and is just one behind equalling Rafael Nadal‘s tally of most number of singles Grand Slam titles.

The former World Number 1 has been fighting a lot of battles in his professional journey this year especially after he was deported from Australia owing to his ‘unvaccinated’ status and also received a ban of three years. Even after winning, he could rejoice much as his desire to participate at the US Open is still in dilemma with so many opinions and versions going around the news. But he is firm in his decision of having no intention to get the vaccine soon. He received flaks from many people and the recent one joining the list is Dr. Jonathan Reiner, Professor of Medicine and Surgery at George Washington University.

“Novak Djokovic should take the vaccine for his own safety”: Dr. Jonathan Reiner suggests the Serbian to act as a responsible athlete

Recently, on a podcast show, Dr. Reiner highlighted the fact that as an athlete followed by millions, Djokovic failed to set a good example for others. He said “When I look to athletes, I look at them as people who sort of getting to the public and to try and represent the best of us. When kids go to the US Open and they’re rooting for a player. I look for a player to show me something that makes me want to reach higher levels in my life.

He further spoke that it looked like Djokovic does not care about anyone other than himself. He added “When I look at someone like Djokovic, someone who has made hundreds of millions of dollars playing tennis, who has lived this incredibly fortunate life, I look at him to be some sort of a symbol of public responsibility. Despite the fact that I do think he should play in the United States, I think he has totally failed to do that during the darkest point in this pandemic where he should’ve been really seen as an example, he has failed to do that. What he did in fact was display selfishness, that’s what it was like last winter, pure selfishness.”

Dr. Reiner feels Djokovic should take the vaccination for his own safety concerns. He even said “Look, I think it’s a bad take for Djokovic not to be vaccinated, I think it’s a bad example. I still think he should be vaccinated for his own protection, and his concerns about the safety of vaccines I think are unwarranted. The vaccines are extraordinarily safe and the risk to an athlete’s health is much greater from the virus itself than it is from any potential vaccine.
